In early 2012, he released an LP titled Rock and Roll Night Club. On January 9, 2012, record label Captured Tracks announced the signing of DeMarco. Failing to find work as a musician, he participated in medical experiments for money and worked on a road paving crew. In 2011, DeMarco moved from Vancouver to Montreal to begin recording as a solo artist. He was joined by Alex Calder and Jen Clement, signed to Unfamiliar Records, and toured with Vancouver band Japandroids in 2009. DeMarco worked on "psychedelic" video projects during this time. Living in the Killarney neighbourhood, he released a self-produced album, Heat Wave, as a part of the indie rock project Makeout Videotape in 2009. 2009–2012: Early projects and first solo album Īfter graduating from Strathcona High School in Edmonton in 2008, DeMarco became a backing musician.

He started smoking cigarettes as a teenager, which has now become a big part of his image. During high school he was in several bands, including indie rock band The Meat Cleavers, alternative R&B group The Sound of Love and post-punk band Outdoor Miners (along with current keyboardist, Alec Meen), which was named after a song by English rock band Wire. Around this time he started playing guitar, with lessons from his grandmother. ĭeMarco attended McKernan School for junior high.

His mother, Agnes DeMarco, later changed his name to McBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco, after his father left when Mac was 4 and refused to pay child support. His great-grandfather is Vernor Smith, Alberta's former Minister of Railways and Telephones, for whom DeMarco was named, and his grandfather (also named Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith) was a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta. Life and career 1990–2008: Early life and educationĭeMarco was born in Duncan, British Columbia on Vancouver Island, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. His style of music has been described as "blue wave" and "slacker rock", or, by DeMarco himself, "jizz jazz". DeMarco has released six full-length studio albums, his debut Rock and Roll Night Club (2012), 2 (2012), Salad Days (2014), Another One (2015), This Old Dog (2017), and Here Comes the Cowboy (2019). DeMarco is still a befuddling character, but the compressed landscape of 2 takes steps away from his cartoonish beginnings toward something equally strange, but possibly more grown up.McBriare Samuel Lanyon " Mac" DeMarco (born Vernor Winfield McBriare Smith IV April 30, 1990) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. The album's gentle acoustic closer, "Still Together," does much to even out the rest of the album, wrapping up the eccentric smoky guitar jams and tongue-in-cheek moments of 2 with an unexpectedly sweet slice of spare, devotional balladry. If anything, 2 borders on sounding so cohesive the songs become indistinguishable from one another. Even the wobbly instrumental "Boe Zaah" blends into the bigger framework of 2, winding the record down into its final songs without feeling either jarringly different or tacked on. The nocturnal shut-in undertones permeate most of DeMarco's tunes, sounding like he's singing from deep within some private world in his mind similar to his contemporaries like Ariel Pink, John Maus, and Willis Earl Beal. Without completely recycling melodies or lyrics, "Ode to Viceroy" sounds pretty directly similar to "My Kind of Woman" in tonality, pacing, and general feel. Instead, DeMarco puts his energy toward cultivating a strange late-night loner atmosphere, which touches even the yacht-rock partying apology song "Freaking Out the Neighborhood" and the wiggly jam band guitar noodling of "Annie." Heavy repetition factors into the cohesiveness of the album as well. While 2 maintains a damaged sense of humor, there's less absurdity afoot. The sincerity of even the most delicate songs on R&RNC was called into question when they were placed side by side with stoned, sophomoric ones. Part of this is the sense of cohesion that runs through the album.

Though his off-kilter pop sounds got rolling in the late 2000s with his Makeout Videotape project, the development he's been working on since his early cassette-only albums comes into full focus here, with his songs sounding as serious and straightforward as DeMarco's trickster-like persona will allow. Just months after the release of that confusing collection comes 2, DeMarco's proper full-length debut. The atmosphere on R&RNC was jagged, with tracks either sounding identical or taking sharp stylistic left turns, with results ranging from warm bedroom pop to Ween-esque demented goofery. Vancouver, British Columbia weirdo Mac DeMarco appeared under his own name in the spring of 2012 with Rock and Roll Night Club, a grab-bag album's worth of songs marketed as an EP.
